On Saturday, March 14, Mraz Brewing Company will declare war on epilepsy with special event to raise money and awareness about a disorder that claims as many lives as breast cancer in the U.S. every year*.
Chris Simarro, father of brewery partner Justin Simarro, was stricken with epilepsy about 10 years ago. Initially contributing a series of small seizures to anxiety, Chris suffered his first grand mal seizure in April 2012. From that point on, the grand mal seizures grew in frequency and severity.
Chris has spent the years since his first major seizure working with doctor's to find a medication to aid his affliction. Unfortunately, that search has yet to yield any relief. Along with the continued seizures, Chris also deals with the side effects that surface with each new medication.
"We spend a lot of days at doctors appointments," explains Chris's wife Heidi. "His seizures have caused shoulder damage, resulting in having surgery on both shoulders to repair multiple tears last year. He had kidney failure, possibly from a virus, even a torn bicep."
And of course, with ongoing treatment and prescriptions come the exorbitant hospital bills.
"It's sad when you debate calling an ambulance because you know you don't have a way to pay another bill," says Heidi.
The physical, emotional and financial burden is amplified by the fact that Chris is unable to work due to his condition. Heidi shoulders the load, but it takes a heavy toll. Fortunately, Heidi says their strength as a couple has helped them through the trying times.
"Chris and I have a strong relationship. We are very supportive of each other."
Mraz Brewing Company places a huge emphasis on the value of family and supporting the ones we love. That's why we'll be hosting a fundraiser to help Chris and Heidi continue to search for help against a condition that strikes almost 500 new people daily in the U.S.
From 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. on March 14, 20% of the proceeds that go into the brewery till will go toward Chris's fight against epilepsy. North Border Taco Truck will be at the brewery from 4:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. serving up amazing authentic Mexican food.
Come enjoy some delicious food and craft beer to help a father, husband and fellow craft beer enthusiast fight back against the crippling costs of epilepsy.

Cancer sucks! It’s hard to find someone whose life hasn't been impacted in some way by this horrible disease. Recently, two of our amazing customers, Gavin and Sarah were diagnosed with cancer.
Gavin, a 29-year-old chef, homebrewer and aspiring cicerone, was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer in November. He received the news just five months after his 26-year-old wife Sarah, also a homebrewer and a recent UC Davis Law School graduate, had been diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkins Lymphoma.

The couple have undergone multiple surgeries and ongoing treatment since their diagnosis. During this time, they've received a tremendous outpouring of local support and now they want to pay it forward. So we’ve teamed up with them to help raise raise money for cancer research and awareness.

The new Mraz Brewing Company brewery and barrel-aging facility in El Dorado Hills.
If you've heard the rumors circulating that we're expanding, you heard correct. Following is the press release officially announcing our acquisition of a new production facility in El Dorado Hills.
EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. – On Monday, January 5, Mraz Brewing Company founder and brewmaster Mike Mraz revealed the brewery had acquired a new, 3,000 square foot production facility in El Dorado Hills. The site, located approximately two miles south of the current brewery and tap room on Francisco Dr., will be home to a new brewing and tasting area, as well as one of the largest barrel-aging programs in the region.
The new site will provide much needed capacity to accommodate surging demand for the brewery’s popular American and Belgian style ales.
“We’re really excited about the move,” Mraz said. “It’ll give us the space we need to produce more beer. It will also allow us to really focus on increasing our barrel-aging capabilities, something we’re becoming known for. Right now, it’s difficult holding beer back for our tap room. The more people learn about us, the more they want our beer.”
The expansive industrial building will be used exclusively for barrel aging upon the planned February move-in. Mraz said he anticipates having the brewing system transitioned into the new location by year’s end when demand is expected to surpass the capabilities of the current production area.
“We’ll add as much barrelage as I can fill in the beginning, with the goal being about a 100-barrel capacity,” Mraz said.
Aside from special events, the location will initially be closed to the public. When the tasting area does open, Mraz said he foresees a markedly different environment than the intimate Francisco Dr. location.
“I want it to be open. Barrels around the side with picnic tables and a tap center in the middle,” Mraz detailed. “It’ll have less of a bar feel and more of an industrial feel where the customers are immersed in the brewery.”
The current tasting room will continue to serve in the same capacity even after the brewing equipment has been moved to the new property. Mraz said he hopes to eventually have food available at the Francisco Dr. location, and the freed up space could possibly be used for prep.
Since opening in May 2013, Mraz Brewing Company has released more than 30 beers, won a pair of gold medals at the California State Fair Craft Brew Competition, more than quadrupled its initial production capacity, and expanded distribution to the Bay Area.

Brewmaster Mike Mraz churned out an astonishing 28 new beers this year. Now we want to know which ones you think should appear more regularly on the blackboard.
